Purpose
I am an artist, mother and teacher. My parents are Cuban and immigrated to the U.S in the 50s. I was raised in a bilingual home with lots of Cuban food, salsa music and loud but loving voices. When my son was born it became very important to pass on that tradition. So I spoke only Spanish to him at home, started an after school program to teach Spanish to the kids in my community, and over the past 12 years developed a teaching system called Sube Learning Language thru Art, Music & Games to help teachers teach a second language. I realized in this process that teaching a second language to a child, whether it is your native language or not, is difficult and challenging, but a tremendous and priceless gift that you give to your child. My son is now 14 years old and the challenge continues as I try to find a way to live in Latin America for part of the year so that he can experience the language and culture by attending school there. The purpose of this blog is to share the personal experiences and resources that I have discovered over the years with parents and teachers that share the same journey, no matter which language is spoken or taught. I also hope that others will add comments and share experiences to help create a rich resource for anyone interested in raising children to be bilingual and globally aware.
